Day 12 & 13, August 31/September 1, 2018 Devil's Tower

August 31, 2018 was a down day, a day to relax and get some laundry done.  We all need a day like that from time to time.

September 1, 2018 travel day to Sheridan, Wyoming.  Nanette nor I have ever been in Wyoming.    Kinda strange since I went to school in Ft. Collins, a mire 20 miles from the CO/WY border.  Very similar to the plains of Colorado - saw lot's of Pronghorn Antelope on the plains - the most efficient animal on the plains in terms of converting the grasses to meat (learned that at Colorado State).

On the way, we stopped to see the Devil's Tower.  Wonderful, spectacular.  Seemingly rises out of nowhere.  Rises 867 feet into the air.  We arrived at the right time.  Had to drop the Cube and drove up to the Visitors Center in the RV.  Parked OK, but when we were leaving there were no parking spaces left. The cars were parking in the RV area (on the side of the road after exiting the parking lot).  Then realized it is Saturday of Labour Day Weekend - very busy.  Glad we got there when we did.

Devil's Tower name came from a mis-translation of the Indian name for "bear's tower" as "bad god's tower".  Indian legend says that seven children were playing when a bear came.  The children climbed onto a rock and prayed to the rock spirit to save them.  The rock grew and grew, the bear kept trying to get the children, clawing at the rock until the bear broke it's claws and it fell to the ground.  The children remain to this day as the group of stars in the Pleiades constellation.

Right off the bat, there was a quilt store not 3 miles from our camp site.  Good thing they opened at 9am.  First stop of the day yep, Calico Hutch Quilt Shop in Hayward MN.  Nanette loved this shop.  Small on the outside, but inside, just keeps going and going and going, just like the Energizer Bunny!  They just keep adding onto the shop by adding rooms on the back of the building. You know you are on the Plains when it is a constant fight/struggle to keep the RV on road - just nothing around to stop the wind... Saw a number of fairly large motorcycle groups headed East.  Left overs from the Sturgess get together?  Likely I think. Stayed at Hills RV Camping.  Nice private grounds right off the interstate.  Cash only, nice owners.  Decent park for the price for sure. Flies were terrible though - tons of them.  Don't know how they kept getting in the RV, but they had a way.  We would get rid of all of them; not an hour l...

Travel day today.  Headed to Mt. Rushmore eventually, but tonight will stop in Minnesota. As traveled through Wisconsin, noted the corn fields.  Figure there would be a lot as Wisconsin is the Dairy State and you have to feed those cows something... We took some very nice state and county roads until we got closer to the Minnesota border.  We then jumped on Interstate 90 which seems to be the road MORE traveled. Some nice rock formations as we got closer to the Mississippi River which separates Wisconsin and Minnesota. Got to the Minnesota line and Nanette made the comment that she had never been in Minnesota before, so I posted that on Facebook.  This evening when we were talking with my son, he reminder her that she has been to the Mall of the Americas which is in Minneapolis, so she has been in Minnesota, so that was FAKE news there!  After being reminded I remember that trip - it was a long weekend get away.  Memory isn't what it use to be! ...

Day 11 August 30, 2018 Badlands

Today's adventure are the Badlands of South Dakota.  Took scenic route 44 from Rapid City to the Badlands.  One of the things you realize is how emenise this area is.  You can just imagine the early settlers traveling across this area in wagons or even riding a horse.  Seems to go on forever. From the Visitor Center we took the Badlands Loop (also Rt. 240) through the Badlands.  Stopped at several of the overlooks.  I just loved standing at the edge of the wall and listening to the wind, perpetual wind.  Erosion in the Badlands is about 1" per year versus the erosion of Mt. Rushmore which is about 1" per 10,000 years (Mt. Rushmore is going to be around for a long time..). Breath taking views.  Photos just don't do justice to the area.  Very similiar to photographing the Grand Canyon.  You just don't get the feeling through photographs. Nanette says she could just take a chair and sit and look at the Badlands all day long. ...
